MY WORK BEGINS AND ENDS WITH AMBIGUITY-JINNY KANG
Overall feel of the show, JoAlJi, had a carefree feeling. The instillation of paper cranes and flowers further advanced the subtle feeling of freedom. The three artists involved in the show, Alex Turner, Jinny Kang, and Joanna Gray, had all of their works together and not separated by artists. Doing this rather than sectioning off each artists made the work more interesting to look at because it would change every time you took a step.
Jinny Kang portrayed her extraordinary ability to draw; Kang’s style includes a variation of drawing techniques such as intricate doodles to very tight and detailed portraits and drawings. Stand out work was One Big Step Back which was a doodle/cartoon that told a story; the tight details of the drawings spoke to me.
Alex Turner is a very talented photographer; he showed many of his best images. His ability to manipulate the images to create a collection of images that feel like a body of work is remarkable. The images all worked very well as a whole and were really in keeping with the tone of the entire show.
Joanna Gray’s beautiful paintings brought some color to the show—the pieces she selected went very well with the rest of the show, giving the show a cheerful tone. Her paintings are an interesting mixture between realist and abstract paintings—the abstract qualities add to the realism within the portraits.
The show was an overall success.
